Texture Size

Hi, After doing some animation, Im now at the part where Im doing Seambased UVW unwrap to give the many faces of the model the proper texture by UV mapping .,

 I noticed most redemption characters use Texture of 256x256 res but I was wondering if anything limits me of giving a 512x512 texture to it?(since Im making it all from scratch) are there implications on preformance if I choose to do this?

I've made swords that use 512x512 textures and the game seems to work fine, but 512x512 is the MAX.
