Small texture recolor tutorial.

Hey Javs, how the hell you do this in Gimp or Paint Shop Pro 4.6? damn i suck at textures... its time to learn few tricks in photo edit.. care to do a small tutorial for changing the color of a texture? lets say i have a comboshirt texture that i want to change to a different color (only shirt), how do i manage this without messing the whole texture? i always had to do it manually with the paintbrush to change the color and i have to apply few layers to make it look Kinda well...
